The story behind the book In author's own words
Many months ago, the "Computer Scientist" / "Economist" / "Investment Strategist" roots ingrained in me since the first day of my career were hard at work. I was "financial modeling" the effects of the pandemic on future GDP growth rates, and on specific sectors, to determine opportunities in the commodity, credit and equity markets.
As I was analyzing daily Covid data from my home state of Vermont, I read a solicitation by the VT Department of Health for submissions of media material for their OurShotVT campaign to encourage good health and vaccinations to rid communities of Covid.
So I decided to take a pause and a deep breath from my inner nerd, to step back from what I loved doing (and have been doing for more than 30 years), and to think to myself: "How can I help?"
After all, for those familiar with Myers-Briggs, I am of character INTJ, a highly unlikely candidate to produce a public video or other typical media material.
As I was determined to do my part, I decided to dedicate a few weeks to write an inspiring poem relating to how the pandemic has affected me emotionally, with a positive and optimistic outlook for the future.
Hence SmileRise was born.
After I submitted it to the VT department of Health media campaign, I immediately received an email saying they absolutely loved it, and asking me if I would provide my consent for them to use it; how to use a poem in a media campaign was still uncertain to them. Nevertheless, as I wanted to help, I naturally said yes.
As more and more people read it and appreciated it, I was also asked to provide a voice reading of it. I did so.
Next, I was asked to possibly do a YouTube release of the poem. Again I did so.
Let me reiterate, all very uncomfortable tasks for an INTJ introvert...
Finally, to cap it all, the idea of a concise hardcover poem book was born, featuring both the poem and an expressive Prologue to describe events, people and circumstances, primarily in Vermont, that inspired the poem.
Before I knew it, my little detour has added-up so far to numerous months of my time. To make it worthwhile, I decided to go ahead with the completion and publishing of the poem book, and to donate 50% of related net proceeds to local and global health charities.
So far, two such charities have been selected: the Bennington Free Clinic, and socially responsible health-sector focused students at EdSeed, a crowdfunding platform that funds top students in troubled regions of conflict (such as refugees) who have no resources to fund their continued education.
The book is published and I feel great that I may make a difference; a difference for those who read it and may identify with the feelings expressed in the Prologue and the poem, and a difference in the lives of those whose health and wellbeing may benefit from the health charities that will benefit from the book.
The bigger question now is, will I ever be able to go back again to my nerdy number crunching/modeling/finance/investment strategy self again; now that I have projected the poet in me?
Right now, the great feeling associated with making a difference takes a precedence over answering that question...

SmileRise - A very short poemis a hardcover book comprised primarily of the poem SmileRise, in addition to a Prologue written by the author describing philosophies, events, places (primarily in New England - Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts), encounters, people and stories that acted as major inspiration for the poem.
SmileRise is a poem of our times, (but yet transcends time), pondering one endearing powerful expression, the smile. It is personal to the author, Bachar Samawi, and yet universal, as many feelings expressed in the poem are also shared by others.
A Prologue written by Samawi precedes the poem. It sets the stage for some of the events, places, circumstances, people and smiles that have inspired the poem. The geographic setting is primarily New England, with a focus on Southern Vermont. The reader is transported through the author's eyes, mind, heart, palate and 1991 Jeep, to experience his passion for nature, bookstores, pastries and cappuccinos, leading him to unforgettable and immortal smile encounters.
SmileRise poem itself consists of three free-form verses (despite the rhyming nature of the last verse), a cinquain reflecting on the past, a sestet reflecting on the present and a cinquain reflecting on the future; all relating to the extraordinary times of 2020-2021. Such times have caused so many smiles to disappear from plain view, but ultimately, a SmileRise is ushering in.
SmileRise poem was shortlisted for complimentary use by the Vermont department of Health's OurShotVT campaign, while author & publisher have committed to donate at least 50% of net proceeds from SmileRise to local and global health organizations.
